1. Turn the Page
In the driver’s seat of her car she sat, tears dropping down her hazel eyes. She was eyeing her ring-finger, now lacking the wedding ring it was once fitted with. A sight she was not accustomed to. Every time Hend’s tears ran dry, like a river in the season of the flood, she shed more and more tears. It was the first time in years that she has felt this lonely.
Hend was unable to grasp the idea that she was no longer engaged to the man of her dreams, the man she had pictured herself with for the rest of her life, the life she had planned so well. A life she had planned to live happily ever after.
After a long and tearful drive, Hend was finally home. As she was going into her house, she found her phone’s answering machine displaying the number one. With the press of the play key came the sound of her manager who was calling to offer her a promotion that she has been expecting for weeks now and one that would require her to move to Milan. In that turmoil of feelings, Hend was unable to express any. She did not know whether to be happy for the long awaited promotion or sad that this promotion was the main reason her fiancé abandoned her.
Ever since Hend told Ahmed, her fiancé, about the promotion, he started behaving differently, cancelling out on dates and ignoring her phone calls for days. When Hend finally confronted him, Ahmed explained his fear of having a long distance relationship at this stage as well as the impossibility of him moving to Milan. A long and fierce discussion started between the couple, one thing lead to another when all of a sudden, Ahmed said that he does not see their relationship working out and that he would not be able to wed Hend.
Hend’s world seemed to be crumbling down on her. With the offer awaiting a reply, Hend had a week to either accept it or turn it down.
The next day, Hend had already made up her mind about moving to Milan convincing herself that this was both a great career move as well as a good way to escape the memory of the failed engagement that has been broken off the day before. Although she knew that this would mean destroying any chance of reconciliation, she knew that she was far too proud to allow for such a thing to happen. In her mind, was the firm belief that moving away was in her best interest and therefore, the decision was made.
